We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
What can I say for you, to what compare you, O daughter Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter Zion? For vast as the sea is your ruin. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. The Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended. [Lamentations 2:13; Matthew 5:4; Isaiah 60:20b]
A sword will pierce your own soul too:
So that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed. [Luke 2:35]
O God, you willed that in the passion of your Son a sword of grief should pierce the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary his mother: Mercifully grant that your Church, having shared with her in his passion, may be made worthy to share in the joys of his resurrection; who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Amen.
Saw him then from judgment taken,
And in death by all forsaken,
Till his spirit he resigned.
