Music at Midday, our Lenten recital series, will feature gifted young musicians who are students in the Sacred Music Program at Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music. Brief recitals from 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM will take place on Wednesdays during Lent.

Our Neighbor’s Faith – Fr. Radu Bordeianu (Audio)

As part of this year-long class on five of the primary world religions, the class welcomed The Rev. Dr. Radu Bordeianu for a lecture about Orthodox Christianity on Sunday, January 29th after the 11:00am liturgy.

Fr. Radu is Assistant Professor and Director of the Holy Spirit Lecture and Colloquium at Duquesne University and Assistant Priest at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in the North Hills. Because most Orthodox clergy are responsible for leading weekly worship, Fr. Radu could not join us doing the regular Sunday Church School hour. Since a number of people may not have been able to attend the special lecture, it was recorded and is available to download. (Please click the link below to listen. Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod Local Bible Bowl (02/26)

First Church will host one of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod local Bible Bowls on Sunday, February 26 at 3:oo PM. All our welcome to come cheer on our team and the other young people of our synod!

First Church’s confirmation and senior high Sunday Church School classes will participate in this local competition and test their knowledge of the Gospel according to St. Luke. If they win, First Church’s Bible Bowl team will move on to the next round of the competition.

The following churches will be competing in the local Bible Bowl at First:

First Lutheran Church (Downtown Pittsburgh)
Nativity Lutheran Church (Allison Park off of Rt. 8 )
St. John’s Lutheran Church of Highland, Team 1 (North Hills)
St. John’s Lutheran Church of Highland, Team 2 (North Hills)
The Bridge (Spring Garden Ave)

The winner will advance to the Super Bible Bowl on Sunday, March 18 at Berkley Hills Lutheran Church.

Caring Committee (Sign-Up Now)

The Evangelism Committee has created a “Caring Committee” that will provide meals to help members of our Parish Family through “rough patches” until things get easier. Susan Hauser is coordinating this project and she is looking volunteers to help prepare and deliver meals.

If interested, please email flc@flcpittsburgh.org and indicate which area you live: North, South, East, or West.

The Injured Soul and Faith

We are happy to offer an opportunity for our members and friends to explore their relationship to God and to others. The exploration includes stories from the Bible and other Christian literature which focus on the spiritual life of individuals and their relationship to God. Those who have felt injured by others or distant from God are especially urged to seize this opportunity. In the setting of a small group, participants can find support and encouragement.

The group meets on Thursday evenings downstairs in the C.P. Krauth Room. Sessions begin at 5:30 PM and last one hour. Carl Hendrickson is the group’s moderator.

Food Pantry Needs

We need the following items:

medium boxes of cereal
canned vegetables
spaghetti sauce
pasta meals
tuna
peanut butter
Flip-top canned food that can be easily opened by the homeless
Deodorant

If you wish to make a monetary donation to the Walk-In Ministry you may do so by writing a check to “First Lutheran Church,” earmarked for the Walk-In Ministry.
